New small school that is five years old and has high teacher churn. Year one, all teachers left to seek out employment at another school. Year two, 50% of the teachers left, year three, 50% of the teachers left again and I was also asked to leave. While being a victim of sabotage and foul play, I received an undeserving Unsatisfactory rating and was told not to return the following year. I was told if I returned he (the principal) would make my life difficult. Teacher attrition continued into the fifth year and this year as well. Teachers at this school are demeaned, disrespected, yelled at and micro-managed. There is no freedom of speech and intimidation is ongoing. Where there is no respect for teachers there is no respect for children. Unfortunately, out of fear for their jobs, teachers do not work together and this hostile environment persist to this day. Any child with behavior issues was removed from the school, thus increasing the achievement.
I got offered a position there and visited the place unannounced . Two fights going on simultaneously and a parent told me “Under no circumstances send your child here!”. Then I opened the Daily News and read about the dean’s amourous activities with the students. The only thing that Ms. Choi cared about was classroom management, but I must say she was very pleasant toward me. When you’re in a hellhole like this it’s difficult for everyone. Glad I didn’t take the position.
But who are you
Choi practices very shady policies such as transferring students with behavioral issues to fluff up the academics of the school, promotes intimidation and mistrust in the teaching staff, and chases out staff with a threat that if they remain their work lives would become worse.
She hired dean if students who is not certified teacher to save money, and see what happened next:
Whenever I told people I worked in Hell’s Kitchen they assumed I had a very different student population than I did. BOSS kids come from a variety of background and many of them are struggling at home and need support and guidance and firm rules planting them in place.
Yet- for some reason, the administration has remained stagnant for years allowing what can only be described as “nightmare-circus” take place, and I do believe that Rosa Choi is the ringleader- and masks her ignorance or incompetence with attitude and fear.
Fights are constant at BOSS, screams and crying are head in the halls daily and for a school that can only draw new teachers- they seem to push them out the door year after year without providing any support. Deans were never actual deans and had a weak control of the school, and Rosa Choi left discipline only to herself so she could have complete control and omit various situations, which I feel bad as some put her in danger.
Principal Solomon is a decent man who wants what is best for all students, but for some reason can’t seem to get rid of this AP whom is every bit as horrible as the descriptions on here. Likely because she is well trained in fudging numbers and flat out lying/denying situations that are brought up to best benefit herself and the numbers, which I suppose at least helps the students.
Belittled staff from all over the district will eventually find themselves in other schools where the grass is most certainly greener.
The DOE and UFT need to physically inspect this school and determine how to fix what is a serious problem, producing parent-murdering children, sex-offender community relations people, serious discipline issues, and what is an absurdly high turnover rate.
Teachers there are scared, but will most certainly speak out about the atrocities of working with Choi. She has left many mental scars on teachers and students alike, truly a horrible scorecard for an ‘educator’.
Were you a former teacher at this school? How is the conduct of the students of the school ? Are there fights ? How is it academically? Are grades to standard? Is the sports program all it is said to be ? I have a lot of question because my child will like to attend this school.
Too bad you’re a former teacher who could not appreciate the great things she is doing for the kids today. Shameful
Comments here seem inaccurate and by someone who frankly received negative ratings. Most of us teachers have been at the school between the four and six years that the school has existed. Rosa Choi is a strong assistant principal. The students without fail listen to her closely. Teachers often ask her for advice. The schedule she makes is not perfect but better than you see in most schools even on the first day of a new semester. The atmosphere in the school is professional. Students come from all over the city and many of them dress in coat and tie because of all the organizations that they meet with. Ms. Choi is always thinking about what’s best for the students. Any school would be lucky to have her as an assistant principal. I have really enjoyed working with her.
You obviously represent a minority in this school because it is known
throughout the building how dysfunctional this school environment is. Choi is abusive and knows nothing about servicing the population of students that attend her school. You don’t gain respect from children by instilling fear! And that’s all Choi knows how to do is throw her weight around! She is abusive and incompetent. She doesn’t allow her teachers to teach, because she interferes with instruction daily. Choi and Josh dictates regularly how instruction should be done, but yet when their assistance doesn’t work …the teacher is blamed for their errors. The moral of the teachers at this school is depressive and the test scores have continuously declined
each year, proving their incompetence as school leaders. Oh yes there are a few dedicated followers of this administration, who have happily survived the ugliness, but like so many others it’s just a matter of time before they too face the famous “Please leave, you’re not a good fit” scenario. I would never send my children to this school and I would not allow my children to be in the company of Choi or her supervisor. They lack moral character.

Perhaps it is your own character that needs to be brought into question. I’m not sure if you are a teacher or a parent, but you clearly don’t know what it means to be a functional administrator. There purpose is to serve the student body and do what’s best for the children. Unfortunately, that includes letting some staff go and being somwwhat firm with students. Sadly, some students receive no discipline at home and are seeking some attention and support when acting out. I would absolutely entrust my children in their hands. I do have to question ever leaving them in your hands however

Vonda, you’re such a liar two face incompetent teacher
Rosa Choi is a horrible and immature leader. I agree that Vonda Lynn has no clue what’s she’s talking about and is quite possibly one of her loyal supporters or Choi herself. Rosa has the ability to be a strong leader, but she’s incredibly divisive, classist and cliquish. She creates an atmosphere that separates and divides and is uncomfortable for everyone to work together. Everyone hates everyone and has been good at masking it for a time until new opportunities come along. She wants the appearance of collaboration but she leads with from the top down. She values no ones opinion but her own and a very select few that are under her protection and she makes it boldly obvious who she values and who’s on her shit list. She publicly disrespects adults in front of students and has been heard calling kids “ghetto”. The academic program at this school is no better or worst than any other NYC public school, so decide for yourself if you want your child to go here or if you want to work here.

While working at BOSS high School I witnessed many accounts of Ms. Choi abusing her power and enforcing a culture of fear and hatred among staff. If you want the truth about this evil woman this is it:
She turns staff on each other in order to maintain full control and power, if you are not willing to go along with her dictatorship ways. She has private meetings with her loyal followers and turns them against you. You quickly begin to feel isolated. You are then unsupported as a way of sabotaging your work and progress, thus making you look incompetent.
Ms. Choi appears to have a strong influence over Principal Solomon, she encourages who is hired and fired based on her strategic manipulation strategies that have worked over and over again.
Ms. Choi has also turned many students against staff who do not obey her. Students are encouraged to report back to her in an attempt to build strong cases when Choi decided that someone has to go. I have also witnessed Choi setting staff members up by having students ask staff random questions with no basis. Students then report back to her on the teacher/ staff’s inability to help them. Her inner circle also encourages this. This especially includes, Jennifer Hall, who oversees the school’s after school program and Margarita Fermin, Social Worker. Tara Bellevue is another loyal subject who can not be trusted.
These are just some examples of what goes on in this place. I do not recommend anyone try and get a job here if you want to work in a healthy environment where you are respected or valued.
Thanks for the insight on faculty, but how is it on the aspect of being a student at this school, is it all what it is made out to be a great program for the students ? What is the student behavior like , are they friendly and willing to learn? Are there any fights ? Do the students excel in this program ? Do they actually go onto good colleges ? Do they benefit from the CTE program? Thanks again for posting
I always find comments like these very interesting. I have been a teacher for several years and I often try to reflect through both perspectives in difficult situations. There should be no allegations of me not knowing the situation as I have worked for both Mr. Solomon and Ms. Choi.
I am almost certain that any low evaluations were deserved. If you believe something is questionable I’m sure never would mind if you reference the rubric. Here’s a suggestion, instead of bashing your administrators on websites, reflect on your own teaching and push yourself to grow. They know what they are doing and they, especially Ms Choi, knows what good teaching looks like. Stop blaming others.

Josh is from a wealthy and well connected NYC family. He appears to be on the autistic spectrum, and depends on his former colleague, Rosa Choi, to do things for him. She prepared the application to open the school, and continues to “run” the school.
I agree the culture was one of fear, including summoning students and teachers to turn on her latest target. She is likely a psychopath, as she is inclined to act in this way and enjoys the game. The people in the school are the pawns with which she plays. Typical of psychopathic behavior, one never knows when it will be “your turn” — there is no logic. Teachers who were well liked one year, like Sarah Berger and Michelle Padover, are targeted the next. I feel sorry for her husband and child. She is creepy.
There is yet another business position at BOSS as there is every year. I visited the school last year and there is simply no way anyone should work there unless they are completely desperate. I definitely wouldn’t send my kid there. I talked to Choi on the phone for some time and found her very pleasant. Most schools are a mess because there’s no suspensions, cell phones, and a total imbecile of a mayor.
