Open letters

One of many open letters to those with power to stop the attacks on our colleagues and profession.

When an administrator, such as a principal or assistant principal, goes after an educator, they don’t do it without the knowledge of others. In addition to network leaders, attorneys and cluster leaders, the superintendents are involved and sign off on charges and discontinuances. Who is their boss? Well, the Senior Superintendent of course.

Ms.  Laura Feijoo is the Senior Superintendent at the DOE. She works under Deputy Chancellor Dorita Gibson. The two have been working together for quite some time. See old IS 25Q website. Maybe with BloomKlein era behind us, they can work on fixing some of the horrific policies put in place. I spoke to the two at a UFT Chapter Leader meeting last month.

Ms. Feijoo,

I realize it’s vacation for teachers, however, there is no vacation from the psychological attacks on our members. Even during the break, my inbox is filling up with more stories of targeted educators. Many, but not all, are about discontinuance or the threat of discontinuance.

These educators, and other tenured ones,  are joining the DTOE.org group. Some are veteran and experienced teachers that find themselves targeted in an attempt to be pushed out. We met in a basement conference room two weeks ago and as our numbers grow, we will meet again in two weeks.

If you, and the rest of the administration, are not going to change course in your attacks on our colleagues, then please be ready for an increase in speakers at the Panel for Educational Policy. Expect rallies outside not only Tweed, 65 Court St, but other offices that house those that take part in these attacks. This includes Linden Blvd and Queens Plaza. Yes, we will be going to the network offices and offices of Senior Field Counsel. We will rally outside the schools that house the abusive administrators. Administrators that this DOE has yet to curb. CSA headquarters is also on the list, so I’m copying Ernest Logan. “Dignity and Respect” Chancellor Fariña? We are waiting impatiently. Our new Administrators in Need of Improvement (ANOI) form is gaining popularity and we are seeing repeat nominees.

Please do not take this email as a threat in any way. It’s really more of an offer of information than a threat. We are open to collaborating with you all should you wish to handle this more professionally. Rallies and public speaking on live camera can get messy. As you know, once it’s on the internet, it’s on the internet for good. Social media is our media.

Professionally,

Francesco Portelos
